Talking To Dogs As If They're Humans: Is It Possible To Take It Too Far (Reddit Discussion)

Okay, so question to all you pet owners: you talk to your pets, right? We know that we do. And we have a tendency to say some really funny things to our pets. We don't even think about it sometimes. They just… bark or meow at us, and we reply to them as if we understand them. Because sometimes, it feels like we really do understand them. We can predict their behavior and reactions to the point where it's as if our brains translate those sounds as ones with meaning.

Of course, that doesn't excuse us saying ridiculous things to our pets. And it certainly doesn't excuse us having… full blown conversations with our pets. Hey, don't judge us though! We are convinced that our pets not only understand us but that they also like it when we speak with them. What do you think though? Is there such a thing as taking it too far with this?

Honestly, we see no issue with this. Maybe your girlfriend is just confused by you having this discussion with the dog rather than with her. But personally, we think it's kind of cute. We would think that seeing you being so wholesome and cute with the dog would be a good thing.

It's not just dogs either. As people who have owned both, we can safely say that we think cats and dogs both can understand us to a certain extent. It's in our tone, our body language, our expressions. Animals are a lot more observant than we normally give them credit for.
