When you finally sort out your wedding guest list and send out invitations, you should assume that not everyone will be able to make it. A wedding invitation is not a summons, after all. However, informing the bride and groom that you will not be attending in advance is usually considered to be the polite thing to do.

Still, sometimes life gets in the way, and you are unable to attend at the last minute. This isn't usually a problem, unless you are part of the bridal party or have agreed to take wedding duties upon yourself. It also might be considered problematic if your reason for not showing up is planned vacation and not an unavoidable emergency.

In our story today, our protagonist is left without a ringbearer when this very thing happens; her brother decides to go on a trip with his wife instead of attending her wedding. Years later, she refuses to celebrate his marriage in retaliation. This is only excacerbated by his fiancée's insistence that her family members' partners are only "temporary," and thus, not invited.
